Atlantic Oval Squid

Several species of squid and octopus make their home in our waters, and the Atlantic oval squid is perhaps the most common. The chameleons of the underwater world, squids and octopuses change their colours with mind-boggling speed and variety. The oval squid often achieves intense hues and iridescent spots.

  • Not only are squid equipped with colour-changing ability, they have another special weapon in their defensive arsenal. If startled, squid will most likely dart away and leave you in a cloud of dark ink. This not only helps conceal them from view, but also dulls the olfactory senses of predators, such as eels
  • Atlantic oval squid school together in small bands, and if you happen upon them while snorkelling or diving, they will stop to observe you very thoughtfully, and may even approach to investigate

Flamingo Tongues

Found in the shallows and reefs, these beautiful snails possess a pale orange mantle with black-ringed bright orange spots, very much like a stylish leopard skin pattern. When startled, these snails retreat into their shells. They feed on sea fans and are often found near their supper.

Trumpet Tritons

Divers often spot these enormous molluscs in our waters. Trumpet tritons’ pretty shells have ridges punctuated by shades of yellow and brown. Their mantles are creamy yellow with slightly darker mottling. Adult tritons are typically 30CM / 11.8IN. Their diet consists of sea urchins and sea cucumbers.
